Don’t you just hate it when you realize it might be too late to get your loved-ones a well-thought, well-planned birthday gift? After all, their birthday is in two days! If you don’t get them something, they might think that you forgot their special day, but if you get something at the last minute, you’re also afraid that you’re not thoughtful enough. So what do you do then? Can you still get them the best birthday gift?

First of all, don’t panic! You still have some time to get them a birthday gift that is thoughtful and meaningful. Try to remember some of the things they told you about. Did they tell you they’ve been wanting to live a healthier life? Do they frequently tell you how essential coffee or tea are in their routine? Or maybe they just started a new job and you want to show them some support by giving them their daily essential needs?

What Makes the Best Birthday Gift?

A thoughtful birthday gift does not have to be an expensive one, and it does not even have to be prepared long before D-Day. Gifting them something to help them relax, like an aromatic candle, a bath salt, or an exquisite tea they have never tasted before, can actually be a lot more meaningful than that grand gesture you’ve been thinking about. This is not a myth, in fact, this fact has been confirmed by Jeff Galak, an associate professor of marketing at the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business whose clarified that there is no evidence that recipients’ pleasure at receiving a gift are sensitive to the cost of a gift.

  1. Put Yourself in Their Shoes
While you might not think coffee-scented candle and bath salt as a birthday gift that is thoughtful and meaningful, try to put yourself in their shoes. They’ve been working so hard and they could barely think of small things that might actually be super helpful and relaxing! Wouldn’t it be super nice if someone steps in to take care of the little things they don’t realize they need?

  2. Don’t Try Too Hard
Sometimes we try so hard to give a birthday gift that is unique and distinctive so that the recipient remembers us. But shared sentimental moments are often very unique to each friendship or relationship that it would be less likely to be identical with others. If you can give them a birthday gift that reminds them of the sentimental moments you’ve shared, perhaps as simple as a cup with their favorite color and animal on it --- something they might’ve not even realized they told you, they’ll be surprised and might even be impressed that you remember!

  3. There’s Nothing Wrong With Asking
Okay. Granted that this person you’re giving a birthday gift to might possibly be someone whom you just met. In that case, you might not know much about this person. So, what to do then? Well… do you know that people are, in fact, more appreciative of the gift they ask than the gift they don’t? This research confirms it. That being said, why don’t you just ask them?
